Demonstration Project Second Progress Report prepared for submission to UNIDO

Demonstration Project 2nd Progress Report involving Pilot Studies to Promote Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) Refrigerants in The Republic of Turkey, was completed with a two-day workshop with the participation of Natasha Kochova. The report summarized the activities undertaken since the beginning of the project up to the present. The steps that will be taken within the framework of UNIDO's project protocol No. 120632 signed between United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Refrigeration Industry Businessmen Association (SOSİAD) were stated in the report.  Field visits were made after the meeting at CVK Bosphorus Hotel under the chairmanship of the project coordinator Kıvanç Aslantaş.

Yener Tekcan, General Manager of Envoytec, who carried out three pilot applications in Istanbul, accompanied the project team. After the field visit, Technical Team Leader Dr. Kadir Isa, SOSIAD Association Director Kemal Oz, Engin Sökmen, Sila Dinc, Furkan Göl and Natasha Kochova, held a meeting with Sarıyer Market Chairman Ali İhsan Korkmaz at the Sarıyer Market Ferahevler Branch.

On the second day, Erkasis Cooling and Etix Events participated in the meeting held at AND Plaza Workinton. During the studies Dr. Kadir İsa added that pre-evaluation of existing systems will be made in terms of energy efficiency in accordance with the aim of the project and that the transformation of the new system to an alternative with low GWP will be evaluated in terms of climate impact analysis and life cycle analysis and these will be included in the activities to be done with the participants.

The determination of the Government of Turkey to ban the import and installation of the systems containing HCFC-22 was emphasized. The Demonstration Project is to raise awareness in the country against the risks of high-warming gases that threaten the planet, which will encourage widespread use of environmentally friendly refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential. For this, in addition to conducting energy measurement and analysis in two of the five designated plants, the successful transformation of the refrigerant in the refrigerant systems of the three existing plants with environmentally friendly alternative refrigerants, with remote monitoring and applications of a new generation of electronic control will be evaluated and the results of the new technologies other than HCFC will be shared through public meetings.

The results of the five pilot implementations within the scope of the project will be presented to opinion leaders and sector stakeholders as well as end users within the framework of three activities. The field implementation part of the Demonstration Project is planned to be completed in 5 different facilities in 3 different cities.

- R448A & R452A as an alternative refrigerant instead of R22 in 3 local retail stores (Sarıyer
   Market Ferahevler & Etiler Branch, Çağrı Market Fikirtepe Branch) in Istanbul
- Comparison of one NH3 & CO2 cascade application in Izmir (Unilever Kemalpaşa) with a
   system used only with NH3
- Comparison of one R1233zd process chiller application (Eti Soda) in Ankara with a system
   using R134

Within the framework of Demonstration Project, Envoytec, Erkasis and Trane companies provide support to the SOSİAD Project Team for field applications. The pilot field implementation activities of the project are planned to be completed by the end of September (2019), and to be completed by 31 December 2019 with the activities.

The completion of the Demonstration Project is expected to raise awareness of HCFC-22 alternatives and to attract more attention from service sector stakeholders.

The thematic meetings will be held on 5 Nov 2019 in Izmir, 26 Nov 2019 in Ankara and
17 December 2019 in İstanbul respeectively, also there will be thematic meetings with end users. The seminars will be held until 14:00 in the first half of the day and then there will be a field visit for pilot projects.

Other steps in the awareness-raising process include information at the ISK-SODEX fair in Istanbul on October 2-5, 2019, presentations at the SOSIAD stand, presentations during the
F-Gas Seminar to be held on the afternoon of October 3rd and the presentations in the cooling sector dealers dinner of October 4th, website and electronic periodic bulletins, press releases and promotional materials.
