SOSIAD Described Success of its Demonstration Project in South Africa

SOSIAD (Association of Refrigeration Industry and Businessmen) described process and success of its Demonstration Project at workshop titled “Phasing out HFC’s according to Kigali Amendment while evaluating opportunities to increase awareness about alternative non-HFC Technologies, energy efficiency and standards in refrigeration sector” organized in Cape Town city of the Republic of South Africa on December 5th and 6th, 2019.

SOSIAD Chairman of the Board of Directors and Coordinator of the Demonstration Project Kıvanç Aslantaş was invited as guest speaker by UNIDO and the Republic of South Africa to Cape Town to present Demonstration Project titled “Demonstration and Pilot Activities for Encouraging Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) Refrigerants in the Republic of Turkey” executed by cooperation of UNIDO and SOSIAD to support fight against climate change as an example to the Republic of South Africa.

Aslantaş described his experiences regarding process and pilot applications of the project to stakeholders participating from various countries headed by South Africa. He noted that the Republic of Turkey limited use of hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants to fulfil obligations under the Montreal Protocol and mentioned the decision taken to reduce consumption of HCFC’s to 86 percent of the calculated reference value. As a result of this, he underlined the resulting importance of informing consumers and suppliers and increasing awareness. Aslantaş noted that in the scope of the Demonstration Project, they have successfully transformed facilities in 3 cities with alternative refrigerants and achieved positive results. The Project Leader drew attention to the significance of pilot applications in transforming existing systems to new generation refrigerants with lower GWP values and continued to note the high efficiency and savings achieved from such transformations were shared in thematic meetings which is a driving force to encourage application of these results in other facilities.
